Century Initiative issued the following statement in response to today's announcement from the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship regarding Canada’s (IRCC) new Immigration Levels Plan:
Century Initiative welcomes the new targets announced today as part of the federal government’s 2023-2025 Immigration Levels Plan. These targets include permanent resident admissions of 465,000 in 2023, 485,000 in 2024, and 500,000 in 2025. Canada broke an immigration record by welcoming over 405,000 immigrants in 2021 and is set to welcome nearly 432,000 immigrants this year.
Century Initiative commends the government for recognizing the important role that immigration plays in our economic and social prosperity. The plan they announced today will help build upon Canada’s already strong economic immigration record and its recognition of the importance of family reunification and refugee resettlement.
As Canada’s population continues to age, our workforces are shrinking, and the demand for skilled labour is growing more acute. At the same time, our birth rate is at its lowest in over 100 years. As the recent census release showed, immigration provides a vital means through which we can meet the growing demand for labour. Immigration also contributes to the country’s diversity, resilience and global influence.
Today’s announcement is a positive step forward for the country. Century Initiative welcomes the opportunity to continue working with the government to secure a prosperous future for Canadians.
