Canada 150 Series Century Initiative Panel – Moderated by Elena Cherney with Dominic Barton, Goldy Hyder, Kate Subak and Mark Wiseman
“Why Canada Needs More People”
By 2100, Canada’s population will stand at 53 million based on today’s projected growth rates. This will place us outside of the 50 leading nations – smaller than Argentina and Burkina Faso. Our small size will have a significant impact on our business growth and global economic standing – resulting in falling housing starts, diminished relevance to our trading partners and a smaller domestic market for retail sales. Tomorrow’s Canadians will not enjoy the same quality of life we enjoy today.
We know we can do better. And we believe that Canada needs more people to compete and succeed in the 21st century global economy.
The fifth instalment of Canada Club’s Canada 150 Series, exploring how we collectively ensure Canada is as prosperous at 200 and beyond, and the launch of the Century Initiative, an ambitious national initiative with the goal of changing our social and economic trajectory by growing Canada’s population to 100 million by 2100.
